LiveJournal
This blogging option is brought to us by Six Apart, the creators of TypePad. Although not strictly a blogging platform, LiveJournal is more of a community experience that offers a blogging service. Signing up on a LiveJournal account entitles users access to thier directory, shop from merchants, participate in forums and play community games. Users can create groups, and private blogs accessible only to specific members. The blogging service offers blog templates, custom options and social networking features. It also has mobile service features such as being able to upload posts, pictures or videos from mobile devices. Since it is a free service, users will have to tolerate ads that will be placed on their online journals as well as limited blog statistics tools.
SquareSpace
SquareSpace is a paid blogging service that starts with $12 up to $36 a month depeding on the package that you choose. They have a hosting option, remote management and easy blogging features fit for beginners. Users can launch a full blown website and customize their pages without necessarily having ang programming know-how. The pricing is mostly based on the volume or the size of your blog without sacrificing all the cool features for those opting for the cheaper packages, this way no one is really getting the shorter end of the stick. Building a blog on SquareSpace is as easy as putting together jigsaw puzzles, plus they also offer built in traffic statistics.
Penzu
Penzu is fairly new in the blogging game with a free and paid service, the main difference of this platform amongst others is that it is geared towards personal journals. The idea is, users can build a private blog that will be accessible only to a select group of their choosing or only to themselves. It is very much like an online diary with social media tools, uploading photos is a snap through Flicker and the auto saving feature is also a great addition to help users not lose their work. the simplistic features and dashboard of Penzu is geared towards the inexperienced writer who simply wants to blog, instead of fiddling around with the different buttons to click Penzu wants users to focus more on their writing.
Posterous
Posterous Spaces is a good tool for blogging beginners since it has absolutely no learning curve, very easy to use. Sharing information, photos, videos and other content is not just easy but according to the makers of Posterous, much safer. Users can share via a computer, laptop or other mobile devices and it is well integrated with social networking tools like Twitter and Facebook. The platform is very light on controls, it does not overwhelm with a whole lot of settings and will not require users to learn a programming language. Still, it does not compensate, it is still feature packed with email posting, custom themes, bookmarking tools and autoposting which automatically updates Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and 20 other social media sites each and every time you share a new post.
Tumbler
As thier tagline says, Tumblr is the easiest way to blog or at least microblog. Microblogging is writing or posting very short web logs that may be too long for Twitter or Facebook but too short for a whole blog post. Tumblr is great for visual blogers, those who put more photos and videos in their posts. It is great for blogging beginners but the controls make take a little getting used to. The service also has a reblog feature most enjoyed by Tumblr users, using the reblog buton it allows readers to repost the content to other blogs making it very easy for the content to go viral or spread throughout the internet. Tumblr is a free blogging service although users who want to get their own domain or .com need to register to a different host server. Overall the service offers a great experience, especially for novice bloggers.
